Well, considering the fact that [Matt] Damon provided that opportunity, he obviously felt that now was just as good a time as any time (in this thing) to put forth his prowess knowledge (about diversity/ “type” casting in film).
Effie asserts that traditionally and tritely (unfortunately), growing up in the 70’s the most she was black people in film doing where playing pimps, criminals, prostitutes, etc and [because of], she is passionate about making films where marginalized characters in film are recognized.
The reason she brought this up was because the film (for the show project) only has one black person in it and that black person just so happens to be a prostitute being slapped by her pimp.
In considering that every producer in the room is white, Effie Brown suggests that perhaps they should all be conscience of who they choose to direct a character like such (i.e., hire some people of color-like her perhaps) to ensure the role is delivered with dignity–rather than thrown into the type cast and trite slush pile of oblivion (as typically done by these character types and the people of color that play them).
“You’re looking at this group right here and who you’re picking and the story that you’re doing,” says Brown.
Sitting amongst all his vanilla, Matt quickly jumped in to this chocolate (woman) to sandwich this whole Oreo of a cookie that crumbled in such a way that he felt he’d be the best candidate to explain exactly what diversity is as, (seemingly) Brown’s suggestion was either too brown of a way or not white enough of a way but either way, this is his show, he’s the actor and producer with an Emmy under his belt therefore (and because of) being a white boy has zero to do with his NOT being able to explain to an ‘Effie Brown’ (with dreads, an earring in her nose and having produced seventeen films under her belt and repertoire) what “diversity” is and means.
So, to counteract Brown’s concern [with what she feels the need] for picking a/some persons of color to direct a character (like such-as explained); Matt argued that less ‘diversity’ is needed to direct (such a stereotypical character) and goes on to say:
“When we’re talking about diversity you do it in the casting of the film not in the casting of the show.”
