troubled that she was even pulled over for such reason in the first place-combined by the fact that she feared he was going to try and Tase her (and she stated he’d threatened to).
From there, White says when he jumped on her, he literally tried to break her arm.
As you can see from the video, the scuffle ended with the video camera loosing sight of White and the officer-only hearing the woman’s screams for help from bystanders in the area.
Fast forward, as per the Houston NAACP the officer and law, was only right in asking White to get back in her car however, it was him that escalated the situation by threatening to tase her and physically forcing her to comply after getting impatient.
“He got impatient. This is obviously a police officer who needs some training on how to de-escalate a situation, and I would think it would be especially important in today’s climate,” stated NACCP president James Douglas.
Eventually other cops came on the scene which resulted in White being thrown in jail for two days and slapped with a misdemeanor resisting arrest and search, to which she bonded out with a $1000 fine and possible six month sentence on the shelf.
White’s attorney, Zack Fertitta, fears the charges would wreck White’s professional license.
After seeing the video, Fertitta offered to take the case pro bono, stated, “I’m as pro-law-enforcement as they come, but that’s not good police conduct. You can’t escalate a situation and then claim someone is ‘resisting arrest.’ That’s ridiculous.”
So…two lessons here.
Korryn, driving around with no tags, wasn’t going to drive off from that scene whether she stood outside or remained inside (as we’d seen). The officer reaching in to grab the keys was merely preparing to have the unlicensed, unverifiable vehicle removed from the scene-no matter what. That was his job (as is their decision to allow you to stand there and call a ride or throw you in jail post towing). .
As far as Miss White’s situation is concerned however, the lesson here is what?
She stepped out of her car and became ‘fair-game’ to an animal and just should have remained seated in her car for her own protection and from harm.
Lessons in a snap:
- Be properly registered and licensed. our sister site
- Stay seated in your car.
- Understand that you DO “have the right to remain silent.”
- As long as you are properly registered and licensed:
- Hand over what’s asked (if you can manage to do even that without being shot). Sit in your car.
And do like they tell you at the zoo:
Don’t feed the animals.
…There is no conversation, or rebuttals needed. It’s obvious at this point in 2016 [that] you stepping outside the safety of your vehicle onto that concrete jungle makes you easy prey.
Zoo animals don’t speak your language so what say you, or should you even be saying or verbaliing or expressing at all?
Let your paperwork speak for you and get home safely.
Period.
