The 13 year-old precocious singer not only whips her hair back and forth, but believe it or not, this young child with an old soul knows very well, and is demonstrative of whipping her prerogative back and forth-as she sees fit, knows exactly why, and stands by that.
About a year ago, rumors were flying around about Willow Smith having signed on, then off, as the role of “Annie” in the stage play. As well, at the time, the role of Daddy Warbucks was going to be played by her real daddy: Will Smith who, along with rapper Jay Z, is producing the musical stage play.
Willow Smith turned down the coveted role and explained:
“I just wanted to chill, and be at home, and decompress, and just find out what I wanna do and where I stand on this planet, with the little tiny place we have. I just feel like I want to do it different than what the world is ready for. I’m enjoying just being independent and doing my own thing,” said Willow.
A statement like that coming from the average 13 year-old would most definitely have one taken aback. But coming from the spawn of two parents who not only grew up in show business, but too, have very unconventional parenting styles; it’s quite understandable that this particular 13 year-old’s unconventional upbringing has served her well.
This decision of hers freed up not only the creative space that she needs, but it also opened doors for other young hopefuls to step in and take the lead. The role is now going to be played by up and coming newcomer from Beasts of the Southern Wild: Quvenzhané Wallis who is going to play the role opposite actor Jamie Foxx.
In the meantime, Willow is testing the waters of modeling and recently did a photoshoot with designer Karl Lagerfield, whose Paris studio she visited this past October. She described: [Lagerfeld as]: “very friendly and open. I thought he was gonna be really mysterious, like peering over his glasses, evaluating. But he was just awesome. I don’t have words, because he’s such a huge icon.”
For the spread, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele was tapped. And if you haven’t heard of her, you’ve certainly seen her work in the pages of countless fashion magazines adorned by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Kristen Stewart—baring lots of skin. But fear not, and think not [that, the Smith’s unconventional parenting style focusing on independence and submitting to letting their children make + endure the consequences or benefits of being allowed to make their own decisions] will take precedence in the decision making process of this end of a choice [to model] without their creative control.
You won’t be seeing any excessively bare skin on the pages of any magazine from the Smith’s 13 year-old daughter, no matter how precocious and mature she is.
“I can never tell what I’m gonna wear,” Willow says about her controversial and often scrutinized signature style.
“I kind of just put on whatever feels right. Sometimes that’s Converse and a T-shirt, sometimes it’s Givenchy heels and leather pants.”
The girl’s got her own mind, and the girl has got the right the will to change it.
