NBC Does It Again: Brings Live Musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” To Prime Time

If lyrics [to songs of hers, I love] like:

“Say what you wanna say and let the words fall out: Honestly I wanna see you be brave.”

Or:

“I’m not gonna write you a love song-cause you asked for it…’cause you need one…you see. I’m not gonna write you a love song ‘cause you tell me it’s make or break in this or you’re on your way. I’m not gonna write you…to stay. If all you have is leaving I’m gon’ need a better reason to write you…a love song…today…”

And:

“Who cares if you disagree? You are not me. Who made you King of anything?”

…then pop superstar Sara Bareilles crooned herself into [a] King of King, Lord of Lord’s self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts-in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world renown, 1971 stage play: “Jesus Christ Superstar”-airing this April 1st, Easter Sunday 2018 on NBC.

Directed by David Leveaux and executive produced by Webber, Tim Rice, Neil Meron, Craig Zadan and Marc Platt, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” rock opera co-stars Bareilles, rock legend Alice Cooper, and pop superstar John Legend (as Jesus Christ).

Told from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, the live musical is set during the final week of Jesus’ life as Judas grows more concerned with Jesus’ following possibly causing him to become arrogant and losing sight of his spiritual principles. Judas then turns on Jesus and from there, the strife and show begins.

Originally conceived as a concept album that rose to number 1 on the Billboard charts, Jesus Christ Superstar made its way to the stage-earning 5 Tony Award nom and yielding Andrew Lloyd Webber a Drama Desk Award

Bareilles has been on Broadway starring in Waitress”-taking her pop star hits with her with stage plays centered around her music.
