Gone are the days when an artist stuck to the creative realm of whatever they were branded and known for, and about the only example of “reinvention” fans would get was in the form of switching up their style, hair, or style of music.
Take Leonard Albert Kravitz for example–a.k.a “Lenny Kravitz”.
Known, the world over, for being the hot rocker with signature locks, The Cosby Show’s [Lisa Bonet]’s baby-daddy
…and Zoe’s dad, and for giving hell to a bass guitar; Lenny Kravitz scared us all when he reinvented himself and cut his signature locks. But much to our pleasure-the rockin’ didn’t stop.
Although other than his musical prowess, he left us no note to toll the reason why he switched up hairstyles, he still gave us all plenty Lenny and remained pleasing to the eyes (and ears) of us all.
Nowadays the often reclusive rocker who lets his art speak for itself more than he-himself ever does; Lenny Kravitz is about to let us all in on another side of him that many of us never knew about: the skills behind the lens of Lenny.
Available for preorder right now, come February 2015, Lenny Kravitz will be sharing with the world-his love of photography where word has it, that Lenny has an eye for light that puts him with the best of the best behind that lens.
Dubbed “rock photography” Kravitz’s new book (affectionately named after one of his songs, perhaps?) Flash will offer a rare look into the music life and tour experience of the rocker where Lenny will show off his photography skills that, for years he has honed in on and was taught the fundamentals of.
Even during his childhood [The Jeffersons’ “Helen”-the late Roxie Roker]’s boy had a fascination with cameras-he played with them like toys—having no idea it would be a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy both ways: in front of the lens as a rockstar himself, and later: behind the lens–simply loving the craft.
Throughout the years, after putting the fire out on his guitar for some down time, the rocker’s professional photography friends taught him a fundamental of photography known as Leica-he fell in love with the technique and the nuances and effects he created by light with it.
Along with his artist/photographer friend Mathieu Bitton, Kravitz is consistently notorious for taking pics of his fans while in concert, then posting the pics on his social media page and asking them to tag themselves.
Now…tag…he’s “it.”
Having grown up in the world of celebrity and the subject of pixels, and paparazzi himself, it’s being duly notated that Kravitz’s perspective on the aesthetics of photography is unique and in his new book he sort of turns the lens his way-own his world and demonstrates in pictures, what it’s like to be a nonstop rock star in the public eye of pixels of many: fans, and the paparazzi alike.
Flash’s end result: a coffee-table book filled with photography exclusively by rocker Lenny Kravitz in [quote] “an intense exploration of the photographer…and his subject” [unquote].
P.S.
No worries.
Plenty Lenny is not hanging up his guitar strings just yet.
Having just wrapped his tour in Prague (December 19)
…Lenny is rocking on: full steam ahead.
He is embarking upon his 2015 European/Asian/Australian tour and as well, his most recent album Strut has just been named one of Rolling Stones’ 2014’s 50 best albums of the year!
You can preorder Flash and stay up on all things Lenny right here
In the meantime and in between time, rock with me atop OSF’s big screen-the hottest rock-metaphoric political jams ever: one of my all time favorite Lenny Kravitz classics AND by pressing “play” right c’here to two other’s that mean the world to me. I loved ’em-then and now! ↓
