So that she could move onward and upwards in the history books, all prepared and physically and mentally ready to kick some butt yesterday, Serena Williams’ match went out like the Mike Tyson fights of old: she barely broke a sweat before the opponent was out from the count.
The 30-minute match held at Arthur Ashe Stadium against Russian Vitalia Diatchenko ended with Diatchenko limping off to obscurity with the score at 6-0 2-0.
“It was definitely different. And bizarre. I kept thinking: ‘just stay focused, don’t lose it’. You never know what can happen.”
Whether that last bit was self-talk (or gracious ‘trans-netting’ head-talk to help her opponent along) the fact of the matter is: she’s still keeping her head in the game despite any and all opponents most probably being afraid of what they are up against-knowing the 21-time grand slam winner is after her seventh title/22 match winning streak in New York.
Serena taps into her sense of calm as a form of mediation to prepare her for the court.
“Sometimes if I’m down I need to have a little extra fight, a little more power and passion. But there’s also a calm that I need to tap into to do the best that I can as well.”
This calm often times comes in the form of watching a lot of television.
“I never leave my room too much,” she says. “I kind of become in there, in that space, and I just watch endless Netflix.”
