The Straight Outta Compton biopic about rap group NWA opened up some old wounds and a Pandora’s box that will not let sleeping dogs lie about the way they were when they were dogs. Discussion of misogyny is running amok as a result..
Rightfully so when considering one of the members of the group (Dr. Dre) has been raked over the coals for having an abusive past with violence against women-a past that, even with his mounting success and new life surrounding all things responsible, sound, sensible and structured; still, fan remember and are unforgiving and victims of his past (e.g., singer Michel’e and former television host Dee Barnes-who just spoke out this week for the first time); make it known all is not forgiven and healed.
Well since Dee Barnes spoke out this week-Dr. Dre has spoken too, and is hoping to heal the wounds of the wounded.
Via statements given to the New York Times today, and published by Joe Coscarelli, Dre explains:
“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way.”
Adding:
“I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again. I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
