Straight off the heals of being introduced to the world in 12 Years a Slave, nabbing countless coveted awards of recognition for work in it and from there-going on to joining the cast of Star Wars and teaming up with 12 Years of Slave’s Brad Pitt in Americanah; Lupita Nyong’o was double-tapped by Disney for the release of Tim Crothers’ “Queen of Katwe.”
Directed by Mira Nair (director of 1991’s Mississippi Masala), Queen of Katwe is a story about young, African chess prodigy (Phiona Mutesi) who emerges from the slums of her country of Uganda by becoming a world renown chess phenom. Lupita is set to play “Harriet Mutesi”-Phiona’s mother.
As well, Oscar winner David Oyelowo (Selma) is in negotiations to star in the film alongside Lupita.
