Billboard, owned by Prometheus Global Media, is an American music magazine headquartered in NYC and founded in Cincinnati by William H. Donaldson and James Hennegan. It was first published in November 1894 and is distinguished as one of the oldest trade magazines in the world.

Its original focus was on bill posting (a guerrilla marketing tactic that places advertising posters or flyers in legal or illegal places). As well, its original focus was on outdoor amusements before turning its focus solely on the music industry in the 1960s.

The Billboard Award is a publication and music chart decided upon by popularity in the music business.

“Popularity” based on various song charts which (by mid-1958) were consolidated into the Hot 100.

Those Hot 100 (today) are decided upon based on radio airplay, digital downloads and streaming activity (including data from YouTube and other sites like it).

The 2015 Billboard Awards was hosted by Chrissy Tiegen and rapper Ludacris
