MADONNA Puts On For Her City
Michigan native and pop star maven: Madonna is making miracles and muscles while too; matriculating her daughter into University of Michigan.
During a recent visit to her hometown of Detroit, the pop queen and Hard Candy gym franchise owner was inspired to donate duckets toward the construction of a new youth boxing gym: The Downtown Youth Boxing Gym.
As well, she purchased iPads, iPods, and other school supplies for charter school students—“the first phase of a long-term commitment to the city,” according to a news release that was issued by her publicist, Liz Rosenberg, this past Monday.
The boxing gym offers free after-school boxing and educational mentoring for children.
The Like a Prayer singer and [2008 Rock and Roll] Hall of Famer will be providing funding for the new facility and too, will be buying new equipment for other programs under the umbrella of the facility’s curriculums.
Additionally, the Express Yourself pop star will be providing art and music supplies for the Detroit Achievement Academy, as well as providing assistance to a nonprofit (The Empowerment Plan)-an organization that employs homeless women who sew garments that are distributed to the homeless.
Regarding the city’s efforts to bounce back from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S history, the Material Girl said in a written statement: “I was deeply inspired by the efforts of so many people who I met who have dedicated themselves to helping the kids and adults in Detroit elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty. It was obvious to me that I had to get involved and be part of the solution to help Detroit recover.”
She humbly added (about her hometown and the love of it): “A piece of my heart will always be in Detroit, and I’m humbled to be able to give back to my community,” she said.
Before becoming “Madonna,” Madonna Louise Ciccone grew up in Bay City Michigan, and the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills. As well, she attended the University of Michigan on a dance scholarship before she took off the New York City to take her bite out of the big apple and since then; (as you can see) the rest is [still making] history.
Madonna’s maternal daughter, Lourdes Ciccone Leon, just attended prom and graduated [New York’s LaGuardia] high school, and is set to follow her mother’s footsteps by attending University of Michigan this upcoming school year.
