“Proud to be Irish every day but extra proud today #EqualityForAll” -Leary

The issue hit home for Farrell as his brother, Eamon Farrell, is gay and happily married.

In a heartfelt letter written to SundayWorld.com back in November 2014, Colin Farrell explained:

My brother Eamon didn’t choose to be gay. Yes, he chose to wear eyeliner to school and that probably wasn’t the most pragmatic response to the daily torture he experienced at the hands of school bullies. But he was always proud of who he was. Proud and defiant and of course, provocative.”

He added:

That’s why this is personal to me. The fact that my brother had to leave Ireland to have his dream of being married become real is insane. INSANE.”

The greater majority of the nation’s voters were in favor of a referendum to allow gay marriage then, and now (2015) the fighting Irish won the issue that now-is no longer an “issue.” It’s just: Official!

Other celebs in support of and congratulated Ireland for saying “Yes”:
